Dr. Janice Beitz speaks about improving quality of life for Ostomates at the 7th National Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Janice M. Beitz, a native of Philadelphia and a proud New Jerseyan since 1977, has over 40 years of nursing experience in acute, sub-acute, and outpatient care settings. Dr. Beitz is board certified as an adult clinical specialist in medical-surgical nursing, as a nurse of the operating room, as an advanced practice wound, ostomy, continence nurse, and as an adult nurse practitioner. She is the Director of the Rutgers University Camden Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Education Program (WOCNEP).
Her program of research has focused on the clinical practice and educational aspects of factors and issues affecting patient safety. For the former, she has conducted funded research on evidence-based algorithsms such as Content Validation of Pressure Injury Prevention Algorithms and Prioritizing Management Approaches to Stomal and Peristomal Complications. Her latest research involves diabetes prevention. For the latter, her research targets social bullying in nursing academia, metacognition, and effective teaching/learning strategies. Dr. Beitz publishes prolifically and is on the editorial and manuscript reviewer boards of multiple wound care and educational journals.
Dr. Beitz has taught nursing students at baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. She focuses on care of adult/gerontological populations and has taught undergraduate courses in adult health nursing, pharmacology, nursing research, and health care statistics. She recently developed and had approved an undergraduate general education course on genetics and genomics in everyday life. At graduate levels, she has taught adult-gerontology NP courses, advanced nursing research, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, wound-ostomy-continence nursing, evidence-based practice, epidemiology and biostatistics, and scholarly seminar III courses. Dr. Beitz is an expert, award-winning teacher in onsite classroom, hybrid, and fully online educational activities.
Dr. Beitz received the WOC Nurse of Distinction and President’s Awards of the Northeast Region of the WOCN Society and, in April 2012, was awarded the Masters of Wound Care Award of the American Professional Wound Care Association. In October 2013, she was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. In 2014, she was selected a Walter Rand Institute Faculty Fellow of Rutgers University to study the health problems of Southern New Jersey. In 2015, she was inducted into the National League For Nursing Academy of Nursing Education Fellows. Dr. Beitz is a graduate of the Germantown Hospital School of Nursing and La Salle, Villanova, and Temple Universities.
