ProCon2®

5 Key Benefits
ProCon2® is a medical device for controlling embarrassing unscheduled bowel movements. The device allows patients with fecal incontinence the renewed freedom to enjoy life with confidence. ProCon2® has five very important key benefits:
-
It restores the quality of life to the user.
-
It gives reassurance that the user is in charge and not under the threat of an unscheduled bowel episode.
-
It returns confidence and gives back self esteem.
-
It gives those who couldn’t go to work an opportunity to once again be productive.
-
It gives back the opportunity to get out and about and travel again without the fear of an unscheduled impending discharge.

How Does It Work?
ProCon2® is a single use disposable balloon cuff silicone catheter with a filter at the distal end
and an filter at the proximal end allowing for the escape of bloating gases. It has a silicone
balloon cuff to prevent fecal matter from passing out of the rectum until such time a bowel
movement is planned.
ICD has received a FDA 510(k) for the Procon2®
Procon2® instructions for use
*Always wash hands thoroughly before and after performing a catheter exchange. Care should be taken to keep the device clean before use.
Preparation for use: remove catheter & syringe from package.
Tools you will need: A pair of blunt nose scissors, a small container of mild temperature water and a water base lubricant such as Aloe Vera gel. (Do not use a petroleum based lubricant.)
Steps for insertion
-
Choose a comfortable position for insertion: standing with knees slightly bent or sitting on the toilet or lying down. Lightly lubricate the anal opening into the rectum. Moisten the catheter tip with water to achieve easy insertion. (Care should be taken
to keep lubricant away from the white hydrophobic filter in the insertion tip area.)
-
Grasp the catheter just below the balloon at approximately 3 inches from the insertion tip. Gain comfortable access to the anal opening and gently push the tip into the anus. Insert to a depth of 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10cm) or as recommended by your physician. At this point you may stand to complete the remaining steps.
-
Utilizing a small container of water, draw the syringe plunger out to a measurement of 25 to 30 cc of water. (For easier handling the water amount could be divided into two amounts of 15cc each.)
-
Connect syringe to the blue inflation check valve and depress the syringe plunger slowly and firmly until the entire amount of pre-filled liquid is injected into catheter. Filling the catheter will take 45 seconds to 1 minute so be patient and go slowly.
-
While holding the depressed syringe plunger in place, quickly separate syringe from check valve so as not to lose liquid. If water leaks from the blue check valve, simply tap the check valve lightly once or twice to stop any leakage.
-
Gently pull the catheter tube to seat the balloon against the sphincter muscle at the anal opening. Push the catheter back in slightly for ease of wear. You have successfully installed the ProCon®2.
-
After installing the ProCon2 catheter, bring the excess catheter tubing forward between the legs and place the catheter “Y” assembly under the elastic band of your undergarment to keep it secure.
Removing the catheter: at this point would be a simple procedure of cutting the catheter tubing at the blue line indicated below the “Y” assembly and allowing the water to drain into the toilet (approximately 30 seconds) and then gently pulling the catheter out of the rectum. Properly dispose of the used catheter in a trash receptacle. DO NOT FLUSH.
*Warning: Care should be given not to exceed 8 hours of continual usage. The catheter balloon may cause restricted blood flows to the surrounding capillaries. Removing the used catheter and reinstalling a new catheter allows sufficient time to preserve blood flow to capillaries. The Procon2 catheter balloon must be deflated prior to removal from the rectum. If the Procon2 catheter balloon cannot be deflated or if the catheter is difficult to remove, the user should seek medical attention immediately.
Helpful tips for use
ProCon®2 is a management tool to assist the user in achieving bowel control. Together with an individualized program targeting a few important aspects of bowel habits and conditions of application, the ProCon®2 will have the user back in control.
-
Chart your personal bowel habits for several days. You will discover a particular time of day that you normally expect a bowel movement. Allow yourself to have a bowel evacuation during that time period by anticipating the “urge” of your body’s natural function. This will prevent constipation by not denying a bowel movement at the expected time. Anticipate your natural time period for a bowel movement and become more effective in preventing unscheduled bowel episodes.
-
If you experience “leakage” while wearing the ProCon®2, you must determine the reason. Is it because of diarrhea? Then apply the suggested “dietary aids to eliminate diarrhea” to firm your stool. Is leakage because the balloon is too small? Try 35cc of water and see if that stops the minor leakage. Or is the leakage due to ignoring your impulse to have a bowel movement and wearing the device for too long? Answer the question for why you are having a leakage problem and do the personal management required to increase your success.
-
If you have difficulty filling the balloon with water, try dividing the 30cc of water into two syringe amounts of 15cc each. The syringe is easier to use with smaller amounts of water. Also, slow down. Squeezing the syringe too hard or too fast will cause the water to have more resistance during the filling process. Take the required time of 45 seconds to 1 minute to fill the balloon catheter. A little patience goes a long way.
-
If you experience difficulty inserting the catheter into the anus, then use a small amount of non-petroleum lubricant such as Aloe Vera gel. You may wet several inches of the catheter tip area to make the silicone tubing slick to the touch. If you still experience difficulty, try relaxing the anus opening by inserting a gloved finger with lubricant into the rectum.
-
Is bloating a problem? The ProCon®2 is designed to eliminate gases through a filter process. Determine your individual cause for bloating. Check “Dietary aids for eliminating gas,” and apply these important tips to your diet to reduce the amount of gas your body produces. If your filter becomes clogged with fecal matter, it will not eliminate gas quickly. Check for this problem by sitting on the toilet and gently manipulating the catheter in your rectum to see if gas is blocked. You may need to change to a clean catheter. If too much gas is your problem, you may need to use a medication to eliminate the production of excess gases.
-
Do you have a concern about the ProCon®2 insertion depth? Using a permanent marker, draw a line around the catheter 4 inches from the tip end. After you insert the catheter you can use a hand mirror to see if the line is visible outside the rectum.
Remember to check with your physician if you experience discomfort or unusual bowel changes that concern you.
